I have a long background in Railway Operations, Train Crew Management, Fleet Management, Customer Information, Education and Training, holding senior posts in Rail and Education. With over 50 years in the Rail Sector, it has given me the skills to lead and direct teams using a collaborative approach, liaising with many different companies and departments. I have been able to develop people through succession planning and mentoring to create industry managers of the future. I enjoy working as part of a team or alone analysing problems, finding solutions for projects and offering advice as an SME.

Rail Operations
I have worked in various roles in operations, performance, timetabling/contingency planning, engineering projects, customer service and customer information for B.R., N.R. and TOC’s.
Delivering a safe and punctual train service for both internal and external customers. Implementing contingency arrangements for train service disruption including weather events. Oversee customer and media messaging. Influenced various departments to get best outcomes for all stakeholders and customer. Deputised for MD and Functional Heads outside office hours as first point of contact. Act as Gold-Strategic Commander for Major Rail Accidents/Incidents and terrorist events interfacing with emergency services.
Assisted in development of training programme and assessment process for SWT Control Staff taking on role of training manager for six months before moving roles. System was adopted by other TOC’s
Was accountable for the provision of rolling stock and locomotives to meet the needs of the train service and maintenance ensuring safety was paramount Including dealing with HMRI, timetable delivery, train crew management, rolling stock provision and maintenance, also customer service issues.

Creation of systems that can measure the effects of leaf fall on the train service, predict deterioration in weather and likely impact on the train service to allow proactive management.

Creation of Customer information systems and initiatives the became industry norm e.g., PIDD.
Implementation of Journey Check for South-West Trains.
Implementing Schedule 8 Performance Regime and processes during privatisation.

Part of national project group that implemented web based computerised logging system (CCIL) for Integrated Control Centres nationally.
Set up Health and Safety system for local school and as Chair of Governors took Senior School from ‘needs improvement’ to ‘good’ after appointing new Head Teacher and governing body and having an Ofsted Inspection.
Appointed a Duty Network Manager as member of team that implemented a Government White Paper, overseeing the integration of TOC (SWT) and NR under a single organisation. The first Integrated Control Centre in UK since privatisation that implemented and operated the robust 2004 timetable. The centre was opened by Alastair Darling.
Worked with Danish Railways to assist them with the integration of their Control Centre that changed their original strategy completely. Also liaised with Japanese and Chinese Railways regarding concept of integrated control.
