I am a rail operator with 27 years of experience and a background in driver operations. I have practical experience operating within fast-changing and performance-driven environments where a focus on safety is a top priority.
Being involved with the driving function throughout my career, I have a sound appreciation of this sector’s performance impact in the broader rail landscape. I have a track record of building strong delivery teams who have ensured that the day job is done well every day whilst being resilient and adaptable to change.
My experience allows me to forecast risk associated with change and I have a proven track record of finding creative and cost-effective solutions to long-standing problems.
As a people-centric leader, I have a passion for developing others and take a great deal of enjoyment from supporting individuals and teams in identifying and reaching their full potential.
With proven credentials in creating good industrial relations, I understand the importance of effective communication and am committed to maintaining strong relationships with all stakeholders across rail operations.
In recent years, I have created and delivered training packages for a wide array of safety-critical roles including Drivers, Signallers, Shunters, Controllers and their management teams.
I am highly motivated and passionate about the rail industry and gain a huge amount of satisfaction from supporting the development of others while expanding on my own knowledge and experience.
Experience:
Rail Operations
Extensive experience in delivering a safe and reliable railway operation through my work with Railway Undertakings and Infrastructure Managers. This includes my focus on fleet and ops cross-function working to drive performance improvement.
As an area operations manager, I have been accountable for developing improvements to operational safety, maintaining traincrew resource availability, managing teams through change and maintaining a broad knowledge of railway operations.
Through my engagements as a consultant, I have supported Railway Undertakings with system integration through my training activities.
Safety & Assurance
With responsibility for creating safety plans within Railway Undertakings, I have experience in identifying deliverable improvements. Taking a world view on culture as well as process I have focussed teams where needed. By taking a fresh approach to employee engagement on safety it has been possible to make measurable improvement in a comparatively short period of time.
As an incident and accident investigator, I have extensive experience in investigating operational incidents. With a working knowledge of non-technical skills, I have supported the improvement of incident investigation through training and mentoring of investigators.
Whilst a senior operations manager, I have been responsible for creating safety performance improvement plans as part of incident investigation output.
Through my activities as a consultant, I have created training programs for a number of safety-critical roles. This work necessitated a robust verification and assurance exercise be carried out and I have demonstrable experience in undertaking that activity.
Rail Training
I have written and delivered training extensively over the last 4 years. From initial Driver training to initial Signaller training through to safety communications training and system and rolling stock training. My working knowledge of the standards and procedures allows me to identify the required tasks of each role while determining the associated risks and creating bespoke training to address those risks in an engaging and industry-leading way.
The training packages that I have produced for clients are in line with RSSB guidance and best practice, focussing on Non-technical skills and using the blended and graded approach to learning.
Clients have included both Railway Undertakings and Infrastructure Managers across the UK with positive feedback received from all clients.
